Microtunnelling is a digging technique used to construct small tunnels.

Microtunnelling techniques designed to obtain soil samples for the purpose of geological evaluation. Typically Microtunnel Boring Machines (MTBM) is done prior to the development of major construction and infrastructure projects to assist Civil Engineers plan for the optimum building and construction techniques. Additionally MTBM may be done to identify if there is any ground contamination or some other geological feature present in certain locations.

Microtunnelling can be defined as a remote-controlled pipe jacking operation able to provide continuous support for excavation by applying mechanical or fluid pressure to balance the pressure exerted by underground water and the soil.
